General Classroom Application
Students who are currently underachieving use the program for 20 minutes per day during the normal literacy block. The classroom teacher can print off reports to show how the student is progressing and use the information as a diagnositic tool for planning purposes.
A questionnaire is completed by the classroom teacher if a student does not improve significantly, which identifies whether the student needs to be referred on to the Starjump VSL specialist for a formal assessment and 12 session block intervention program. The questionnaire is available through the members section of this website.
Assessment
The online assessment identifies the child's dominant thinking style and underlying causes of a learning difficulty.
The specialist invites a parent to participate in the assessment.
It screens for students who need other professional advice or treatment.
It does an automatic analysis of the data gathered and generates a report.
It automatically identifies the extra modules each child needs.
Reference material and resources are also recommended.
Online Student Management System
The child is entered into the online student management database to do the assessment.
This provides the means to comprehensively manage all aspects of the student's individualized learning plan.
Notes can be kept for each session which include text boxes for comments, activities, next lesson and homework.
Previous work done in the classroom and at home can be easily reviewed as it is entered automatically from the online literacy program.
Parents can be kept up to date with a report generated by the press of a button of work completed and levels mastered.
A full history of the child's assessment details and intervention program is stored for new classroom or specialist teachers to access.
How it works.
The specialist teacher's role is to:
- Monitor the child's classroom progress weekly and advise the teacher on how to proceed.
- Teach extra literacy modules that accompany the program. These can be done individually or in a small group.
- Communicate with parents to engage the child at home on the program. All work done on the program at home and in class during the 12 session block period is automatically sent to the student management database used by the specialist.
- Conduct weekly or fortnightly testing on work previously completed.
- Support classroom teachers during the planning phase, to incorporate VSL learning techniques into classroom activities.
- Identify students for the Starjump Club, select activities and train parents to run the club.
Lead the Way.....Become the VSL specialist in your school.

Note: Parents of students attending a Starjump Centre may ask your school to allow their child to use the Unlocking Literacy Program on a daily basis in the classroom. In such cases, we would welcome your cooperation as 15 minutes a day working on the program in class time will make an enormous difference to the child who is currently struggling. When a child is attending Starjump privately, and parents ask for the school to suppport the program by allowing their child access to the program during class time, there is no cost to the school. The program is simply installed onto a computer in the child's classroom for that child to use.
Classroom teachers will see first hand how it works and they will be able to independently judge its usefulness.
